Inversion: Never Have I, Not Only, Hardly … When

Inversi menukar posisi subjek dan kata bantu seperti dalam kalimat tanya, untuk memberi penekanan. Struktur ini membuat tulisan terdengar formal dan berkelas.

Penjelasan

  • Setelah ungkapan negatif atau terbatas di awal kalimat, susunan berubah seperti pertanyaan: I have never seen… → Never have I seen…
  • Jika tidak ada kata bantu, pakai do/does/did: She rarely complains → Rarely does she complain.
  • Hardly / Scarcely … when dan No sooner … than = baru saja … ketika: No sooner had we arrived than it started to rain.
  • Only when / Only after / Only then / Not until: inversi terjadi di bagian utama kalimat: Only after the results came out did I relax.
  • Conditional formal tanpa if: If I had known → Had I known, If you should need help → Should you need help, If I were you → Were I you.
  • Inversi cocok untuk esai, pidato, dan surat formal. Jangan terlalu sering dipakai dalam percakapan sehari-hari karena terdengar kaku.

Contoh kalimat

Tidak wajib. Penguji menilai variasi dan ketepatan struktur. Satu atau dua inversi yang tepat dalam esai bisa menunjukkan rentang grammar yang luas, tetapi yang dipaksakan justru merugikan.

Apakah inversi dipakai dalam percakapan?
